Wind of Change

by clergyman @ 30/04/2006 - 20:29:10

It has been remarked upon by one or two people that Massacre for Boys is rather similar to Solar Wind.

Partly this is inevitable because Solar Wind is the most successful parody of British comics and the concept of Massacre for Boys is also a parody.

However, we're not producing issues of Massacre for Boys. The history section on our website is as close as we come to spoof.

The primary purpose of Massacre is to give a label to a collection of seemingly unrelated comic stories that share a common subplot.

I will be tracking down a copy of the Solar Wind spin-off Big War because it looks like the kind of thing I'd enjoy. Hopefully it'll be available at the Bristol Comics Expo (which I've just booked our tickets for!). However I'd be very surprised if it was anything like Walking Wounded.

Heights

by random-chance @ 28/04/2006 - 22:09:35

Heights is new, never been seen before, so this is his first look. Not happy 100% happy with the picture but the face is right.

Constable started life way back in the 80s as a villain in the crusader. I was probably about 14 at the time of the first attempt and then 17 when we finally completed the crusader's first story. Constable then turned up in the walking wounded a few years later but my art was still based in comics. The real problem with the early designs for all my work is that I, for years had tried to learn to draw from looking at comic artists work. The problem with trying to learn comics from comics is your just a reflection of a reflection, maybe of a reflection of life. As you try and reduce everything into a system or trick you lose all relation to reality. Anyway, here is the new Constable.

wheels

by random-chance @ 26/04/2006 - 19:51:38

A tricky one. How come every time a writer says I have a brilliant idea for a new character they really mean, ‘I have a complicated and incredibly hard to draw idea for a new character with tons of unavoidable detail.’?

The face is directly taken from the Beales on wheels story design so no real need to change the look. now in his military wheelchair Beales is a fearsome opponent for any man. I didn’t really put a huge amount of effort into the perspective as it’s just a sketch but I think it works.

Banzai

Banzai already had a new look in Beales on wheels so this is just a brush inked new drawing of the same model.

3 new walking wounded

by random-chance @ 26/04/2006 - 19:37:32

I have been productive today completing 3 new cast sketches. Brace used to be just my standard young hero face back in the days when I hade such a stupid thing. His last make over for the cover of the resistance was a complete disaster so this has been an excellent opportunity to give him a face all of his own.

old dog new pun

by random-chance @ 25/04/2006 - 19:12:51

Given that some of the art to the first walking wounded strip is over 10 years old I thought I would start again from scratch. A fresh look for everything from the art to all the characters and there are 6 of them returning from the resistance that went mad.

This time round the artwork will be inked with brush instead of pen and all the costumes locations and props will be reasonably well researched. So the complete opposite of the last strip.

And here is the first design, the new look Dog. No longer a rough version of Chris Weston's rogue trooper or any other 2000ad character I was into when I was drawing.

Covering Up

by clergyman @ 25/04/2006 - 18:35:46

I've been making some counterfeit covers for Massacre books of yesteryear. The artwork is existing stuff of Steve's, and really deserves a proper showcase.

Not quite sure what to do with them yet, except I've used one as my avatar at the Pencil Monkey Forum.

Here's our favourite:

Right, now to finish that Bosher strip!

Powder Keg

by clergyman @ 24/04/2006 - 20:39:27

I'm pleased to say that we have now been mentioned by Bugpowder.

None other than Garen Ewing of Rainbow Orchid fame came across this blog and very kindly offered to help out.

Garen, you are a scholar and a gentleman, many thanks!

Web Strips

by clergyman @ 23/04/2006 - 18:16:09

I'm making good progress on the Bosher's Goals script. Should be done by next weekend.

Approaching a webstrip has been interesting because there's no obvious "best way" to present it. The traditional comic page is a problem because it's too long and not wide enough for a browser window.

However, there's no de facto standard for presenting comics online. We did consider a panel at a time, all identically sized, because that would seem to be the most purely web form.

In the end, though, we're going for something rather like Rainbow Orchid, individual strips that fit neatly into your browser but still heavily resemble the paper comics we all love.

Do Bug Me!

by clergyman @ 21/04/2006 - 11:52:17

I've been trying to attract the attention of Bugpowder to get them to post a link to our website.

So far my two emails and one review copy of The Resistance That Went Mad have been ignored, which is a bit surprising as it is the kind of stuff they say they're interested in.

Still, Bugpowder is an important resource for small press comics in the UK and I will keep trying. I guess it's because we're new that our stuff doesn't attract their attention, whereas seemingly every time Leonie O'Moore so much as sneezes they have to tell the world!

First Sketch

by clergyman @ 20/04/2006 - 20:04:54

Steve sent me his first new sketch for Island of Terror today:

Captain Dog

I completed the 24-page script a few weeks ago and we're aiming to self-publish in 6 months or less.

Since finishing that I've produced a first go at a Massacre for Boys website and am about to start writing a Bosher's Goals webstrip.
